Project Overview (Nigeria)

Clean Cooking in Nigeria

In Nigeria, over 40% of the population lives below the international poverty line of $2.15 per day, according to the World Bank. In rural communities especially, families rely heavily on firewood and charcoal for cooking, fuels that are both costly and polluting. Today, around 60% of Nigerians still cook with traditional fuels, exposing women and children to harmful smoke every day and placing a heavy burden on household finances.

Indoor air pollution from cooking is a major public health crisis. Nigeria has the highest number of air pollution-related child pneumonia deaths in the world, with an estimated 50,000 children under five dying each year due to exposure to household smoke.

Our Impact with the Jikokoa Stove

BURN’s Jikokoa is the world’s most fuel-efficient charcoal stove. In Nigeria, it is:

  • Reducing charcoal or firewood use
  • Cutting smoke emissions
  • Helping families save
  • Easing pressure on forests by lowering fuel demand

The Jikokoa is already changing lives across Nigeria. Families breathe cleaner air, reduce expenses, and free up time for school, work, and caregiving, especially for women and girls.

Your support helps expand access to clean cooking in Nigeria, delivering verified carbon reductions and meaningful, measurable benefits to households in need.

Hear from the Project Beneficiaries

I have never for once had any reason toregret buying this charcoal stove. It saves timeand charcoal.

It relieves me of the stress of fanning the charcoal and inhaling of excess smoke. I am superhappy to be a beneficiary of this great invention.
